Small-business owners are expected to know an extraordinary number of things.
You may be exceptional at your craft, profession or industry—but suddenly you're also responsible for sales, employees, customer experience, operations, pricing, technology, marketing, costs, processes and dozens of decisions that have very little to do with the reason you started the business in the first place.
Knowing your business and knowing how to make a business work are not always the same thing.
Simera Business Works was created to bring experienced, practical business guidance to owners who don't necessarily need—or want—a traditional corporate consulting firm. We work with entrepreneurs and small-business owners to understand what's happening inside the business, identify what could work better and help turn good ideas into action.
Whether you're starting a business, improving one that's already successful or working to revive one that's struggling, we meet the business where it is today and help determine what should happen next.
That's also where our name comes from. Simera means “today” in Greek. Because whatever you want your business to become tomorrow, the work starts today.
Christopher G. Papataros
Simera Business Works founder Christopher Papataros has spent more than 25 years building, leading and improving businesses, teams and operations—from owning a small retail business to serving in senior executive leadership roles within large financial-services organizations.
His experience has consistently centered on one challenge: making businesses, people and processes perform better.
Early in his career, Chris purchased a struggling custom picture framing and art gallery. He repositioned the business, expanded its products and services, developed new consumer and commercial customers, improved operations and ultimately grew revenue by approximately 800%. The experience also taught him lasting lessons about capital, leases, pricing, product mix, customers, employees and the difference between understanding an industry and understanding every aspect of running a business.
His career later moved into financial services, where he held leadership and executive roles spanning sales, operations, customer relationships, risk, quality, analytics, process improvement and organizational performance. He built operations, redesigned processes, developed leaders, created training and performance-management systems and led teams ranging from small specialized groups to large multi-location organizations.
Most recently, as a Senior Vice President, Chris helped scale a national organization from 12 to 85 professionals across four locations while the business it supported grew from approximately $400 million to more than $2 billion in monthly production.
Simera Business Works brings those two worlds together: the perspective of someone who has stood behind the counter as a small-business owner and the experience of an executive who has spent decades building organizations, developing people and improving how businesses operate.
No one person has every answer—and good business advisors know when another perspective can make the work stronger.
Chris leads Simera Business Works engagements and remains accountable for the work, but that doesn't mean every idea, recommendation or solution has to come from one person. Depending on the size, complexity and needs of a client, Simera may collaborate with experienced business professionals, trusted associates and subject-matter experts who can bring additional knowledge, challenge assumptions and contribute valuable perspective to the work.
For a larger or more complex engagement, that may mean bringing several experienced minds to the table to evaluate a problem, develop ideas or help shape a plan. The objective isn't to pretend we know everything. It's to make sure the client benefits from the best thinking we can bring to the situation.
And when an issue requires legal, accounting, tax, engineering, technology or other specialized professional expertise beyond Simera's role, we'll recognize that boundary and recommend involving the appropriate qualified professional.
You hire Simera to help solve the problem—not simply to get one person's opinion.
We don't believe small businesses need more consultant-speak, predetermined playbooks or recommendations that look impressive in a presentation but don't work in the real world.
We start by listening. We learn how the business actually operates, what the owner is trying to accomplish, what's working, what's frustrating people and what may be standing in the way.
Then we ask questions, observe, challenge assumptions, analyze what we find and develop practical recommendations around the realities of your business—not somebody else's.
It Has to Work in the Real World
A recommendation has to make sense for your customers, employees, resources, budget and business—not simply sound good on paper.
Understand Before Prescribing
We don't arrive assuming we already know the solution. We ask questions, listen to the people involved and understand what's actually happening before deciding what should change.
Better Matters More Than Perfect
Not every problem deserves a massive initiative. Sometimes several small, achievable improvements can produce more value than one expensive transformation.
Good Ideas Should Lead Somewhere
Recommendations should result in decisions and action. When you want help implementing them, Simera can stay involved and help move the work forward.
Our job isn't to tell you how smart we are. It's to help make your business work better.
Simera Business Works is built for owner-operated small businesses—from a solo entrepreneur running the entire business themselves to established companies with dozens of employees.
You don't need a large staff, multiple locations or a complicated organization to benefit from experienced business guidance. In fact, some of the greatest opportunities can exist in very small businesses, where a few practical changes may have an immediate impact on the owner's time, revenue, costs or ability to grow.
As businesses become larger and more complex, the challenges may change—but the principle doesn't: understand how the business works today, identify what could work better and focus on the improvements most worth making.
When You're Wearing Every Hat
When you're the owner, salesperson, manager, customer-service department and sometimes the person taking out the trash, it can be difficult to step outside the day-to-day work and look at the business objectively. We can help identify practical ways to improve revenue, save time, simplify the operation and build a business that depends a little less on you doing everything.
When What Used to Work Isn't Enough Anymore
Growth brings employees, customers, processes and complexity—and the informal ways of running the business may no longer work as well as they once did. We help owners strengthen management, processes, customer experience, sales, technology and accountability so the business can grow without simply creating more chaos.
When There's More Business to Manage
Larger small businesses may have managers, departments, multiple locations and dozens of employees—but still lack the specialized internal resources of a large corporation. Simera can help evaluate challenges across the organization, identify opportunities and bring additional experienced perspectives into the engagement when they can add value.
Size doesn't determine whether a business can benefit from better ideas. Sometimes the simplest businesses have the simplest opportunities—and the fastest path to meaningful improvement.
We work with businesses across a range of industries, including service and trade businesses, retail, professional services, property and home services, automotive businesses, small offices and other locally operated companies.
Every business has a story—how it started, where it is today and where the owner hopes to take it next.
Maybe you're preparing to start something new. Maybe you've built a successful business and know there's another level it could reach. Maybe things aren't going the way you'd hoped and you're looking for a different path forward.
Wherever you are, the first step isn't a sales pitch. It's a conversation.
Tell us about your business, what you're trying to accomplish and what's standing in the way. We'll listen, ask questions and determine whether Simera Business Works is the right resource to help.
If we can help, we'll tell you how. If we're not the right fit, we'll tell you that too.
